Sean Hurst ショーン ハースト
Shodai Soke-Founder
Head instructor of Honshitsu Budo Jiu Jitsu, Kali, JKD concepts.

I started training in the martial arts in 1981. It is a life long process that has taught me more than just fighting and I hope to continue it for the rest of my life. I have had the privilege to train with some of the best instructors in the world throughout my life, and have had many opportunities to utilize my training. Including: working in loss prevention for Sears and Target, Combat in an elite military unit for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan and Iraq and Finally as an instructor training competitors for MMA. These different situations have taught me the difference between Martial Arts for Self-defense, Self-Preservation, and Sport.
It is my goal to share what I have learned with my students. I do not believe in keeping techniques secret, but rather sharing them in hopes that as my students get better so will I. It is my Goal to see every one of my students surpass my skill and knowledge in the Martial Arts

Shihan
Shihan is a Japanese term, often used in Japanese martial arts as an honorific title for expert or senior instructors. The term is frequently used in interchangeably with English terms such as "master instructor."
Various martial arts orgnizations have different requirements for the usage of the title, but in general it is a high title, 6th dan or above, that takes many years to achieve. It is sometimes associated with certain rights, such as the right to give out black belt (dan) ranks in the name of the organization, as it is with Tribe-K branch schools. however, the title is generally distinct from the black belt ranking system (dan).
At Tribe-K, we regard our Shihan (the permission to issue dan rank) to be a very prestigious position. We start accepting candidates after our senior yudansha vote 100% unanimously in favor of the promotion. We do not base it on a certain rank. So at a Tribe-K school, it is rare but possible for a canidate with rank lower than Rokudan to hold the position of Shinan. * It is also important to understand that yudansha who holds the title of shian does not carry a higher rank than other yudansha (instructors). Shihan is the Title which gives permission to issue Shodan or higher. Shihan is not to be confused with the title of Sensei. Sensei have the right to operate a school even if they dont carry shihan rank (they cannot issue above Ikkyu (senior brown belt)
